Support Vessel / Explorer Yacht Design

Exterior

In the recent years this niche has become our absolute specialty and we openly admit we are in love with this rather new typology of vessel. We designed

mono-hulls & catamarans, always based on a platform.

We believe there will be a bright future for shadow vessels & explorer yachts.

Once clients will understand the vast variety of new opportunities shadow vessels have to offer. Obvious advantages are the short building time and the pricing per meter vessel but there is more.

By exploring the possibility of different Interior / Exterior Standards than the usual A (guest area) and B (crew & staff area) we give clients the opportunity to define “luxury” for themselves.

There is a new clientele which is not interested in the silk carpets or formal dining with super high gloss finishes and they want to use the yacht to enjoy adventures with their friends & family. They don´t like the idea of the yacht industry dictating them their lifestyle and they are looking for suitable alternatives.

Phase 1 Client Brief and Analysis :

It all starts with the client design brief – it´s the foundation of our work – and during phase 1  we will thoroughly analyse it.

The rule is - The more detailed client briefing the better for us - it will give us a good framework to work with. Sometimes clients wishes are contradictual or not feasible if keeping within a certain size range – we will be able to visualize & present different options always keeping in mind functionality & aesthetics.

We are a team of experienced multi-disciplinary designers with a vast knowledge of the industry & super yacht design – but Superyacht Design is very complex.

To make sure our designs are absolutely “waterproof” we like to work closely with a technical team of naval architects who are always up to date with the ever-changing regulations and scan our designs for feasibility.

+ Analysis Design Brief & Workshop Meetings with Client or Owners Team

+ Initial Hand Sketches ( Experimenting with the appearance & design language )

+ Starting a Bloc GA

+ 2D Profile Studies

+ Research & case studies

Phase 2 Design Development ( Support with Shipyard Tender)

To get from vision to a product you need to provide information to the selected the shipyards which they will use to be able to prepare their quotations. This detailed information is called the tendering package.

Detailed Tendering package includes:

  1. 2D Bloc General Arrangement (GA)

  2. 3D model of the design

  3. A set of photorealistic renderings of the Exterior Design which also shows features, finishes & colours

  4. Specification (document containing all requirements)

We are commissioned in this phase to develop the GA, 3D model & the set of photorealistic renders. We develop different designs in close collaboration with client & his team. The 3D model /designs are developed in full consideration of the Bloc GA.

Once the client has chosen & approved his favorite design we produce our part of the tender package (point 1-3).

The approved package will then be sent to the selected shipyards for quotation. This phase is absolutely crucial to receive a reliable budget of the shipyard.

The client can commission phase 2 separately from the following design phases.

Phase 3 Implementation of Design (after signing of the shipyard contract)

  1. Development Detailed General Arrangement

  2. Development of detailed 3D model

  3. 2D Drawings, renderings, and development mock ups

  4. Development Features / Case Studies

  5. Material & Color Concepts

Once the contracts have been signed, the build process will begin. We will start to go into detail - ranging from handrails, detailed deck layouts, fixed and loose furnishing, stairs, exterior lighting.

The designs will be visualized in the 3D models and render images which will be prepared as presentation design intent for the shipyard. (Before supplying the information to the shipyard we will request client or owners team confirmation first.).

The 3D model of the yacht will play be a crucial part in the communication between all parties involved, we will maintain a master 3D model and keep it updated as the design progresses.

Phase 4 Production

During this phase the shipyard & shipyard suppliers will work on the implementation of the design intent.

A very important part of the design process is the accurate interpretation of the design intent.

In order to achieve this SYD will regularly attend ship yard meetings and  review the construction in order to ensure the design intent is followed.

We will also work with the shipyard for the complete build period helping them with issues / questions related to the design.

  • Meetings suppliers, workshops at shipyard with all parties involved from different departments, Shipyard visits

Phase 5 Supervision of Construction

SYD will attend on site on a reqular basis to review the construction in order that it matches our design.

We will also work with the shipyard & Owners Team for the complete build period helping them withiIssues / questions related to the design.

We will receive technical/ construction drawings to review & approval.

The plan approval will be organized & supervised by the

Owner´s team.
