"We see yacht support vessels as a new typology in yachting, so we have the opportunity to define a new form language as well. Utilitarian, dynamic, and with an edgy silhouette, while not pretending to be in the same class as a superyacht, it can hold its own place in the yacht world.“

The concept Big Shadow is a collaboration between Schwalgien Yacht Design and Damen Yachting, a division of Dutch shipbuilder Damen.

At 65 meters in length, the boat maintains a sleek silhouette, using a mono-volume design on the bridge deck by merging the wheelhouse and hangar into one shape.

At 65 meters in length, the boat maintains a sleek silhouette, using a mono-volume design on the bridge deck by merging the wheelhouse and hangar into one shape.

The exterior design is based on the Damen Yacht Support 6511 model. SYD ´s  approach was to accentuate and create a more dynamic, sharper version.

The bulwarks taper inboard to create a sharp crease, enhancing the boat’s length. At the same time, to achieve a more dynamic look, both the roof line and the bulwark line on the deck below converge into an imaginary point, forming a wedge shape and pushing the visual weight of the boat aft.

In terms of color, based on the client’s request and the mothership’s existing color scheme, KSD created a two-tone color palette for the boat’s form: a light grey tone on the sleeker, more contoured surfaces, and a darker grey tone on the flatter elements to push them into the background. It’s a play on lights and shadows.

A splash of colour—Fluorescent Yellow in this case—is used to break up the utilitarian look of the boat and give it "attitude" , as it appears almost unexpectedly throughout different elements: on the helicopter landing markings, on various structural elements, and inside the window frames.

While meant to stay in the shadow of the superyacht mothership, this boat has its own identity, defined by its decidedly contemporary, streamlined shape, its functional characteristics, and its bold color scheme.
