GREEN EIXAMPLE

More information for this project coming soon

During the pandemic I was asked by “Architectura & Diseno” about my thoughts

on how this event will affect interior design in the future. Instead of talking about easy-to-clean surfaces, I asked myself “ What could be the gift arising from this situation? “

Due to the long winter and rainy periods In Germany we are used to staying at home, therefore we focus on creating cosy living spaces.

In Spain people are more social, prefer meeting outdoors, cafes and restaurants, the city is their “extended lounge”. This changed drastically due to the pandemic, this made people more aware of their home environment. Due to covid people started using their communal rooftop terraces

In 2011 when I arrived in Barcelona, I felt that rooftop terraces were sadly undervalued, historically inner courtyards in Eixample were meant to serve the community as open recreational spaces, but those spaces are not available to everyone and parks are overrun due to tourism. During the pandemic  people were discovering the opportunities hiding on their roofs.

Here you see our #vision how future #Eixample Barcelona could look like - Green roofs can be a way to a more beautiful, sustainable and healthy lifestyle in the city.

Research is demonstrating the social value of green roofs for multiple reasons : It tackles urban heat in summer and reduces air pollution . Eixample has the highest air pollution figures in Barcelona and green roofs could be a crucial part of the solution. Doctors are increasingly prescribing time spent gardening outdoors for patients dealing with anxiety and depression. Research shows that access to the most basic green spaces can provide a better quality of life. Solar panels provide renewable energy and the people could grow together as a community.

A project I´d love to be involved.

Here you see our second #vision how future #Eixample #Barcelona could look like - Green roofs can be a way to a more beautiful, sustainable and healthy lifestyle in the city.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Green roofs will help to regulate the climate of the city, help to reduce air pollution, summer heat and retain water.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Of course the vision of a "greener" Barcelona is not new.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Barcelona’s Superblock model is one of the oldest concepts where so-called green streets are introduced. In those streets car traffic is restricted and the space reclaimed for public use.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The Barcelona City Council also presented a government measure to promote living terrace roofs which is the perfect combination with Superblocks.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

There are other projects & concepts which aim to improve the lives of its residents

and we encourage everyone to join the movement, let's build a greener future for ourselves.
